Finally, the U.S. House of Representatives Passes a Bill to Protect the PII (Personally Identifiable Information) of individuals moving to the USA.
Following our post back in June 2023 we are very pleased to report now that steps are finally being taken to prevent the personal details of individuals moving to the USA from being released into the public domain by the US Government, through the Department of Customs and Border protection.
Personal information must be provided to US Customs to clear household goods shipments into the USA and the need to divulge such information is a normal procedure in most countries. What makes it such a risk in the USA is that US Customs routinely releases these details onto the internet!
Currently this release can only be prevented by completing and submitting a Confidentiality Request, well in advance, to prevent this happening. Informing our clients of this risk and how to avoid it is an important part of our service at Nuss.
Many of our trade associations have been lobbying the US Government for more than 10 years to prevent the publishing of this PII and finally a bill has been passed to achieve this.
The task is not however over yet. The bill that has been passed by the House of Representatives still needs to be presented to the Senate and then, if passed, requires the final sign off by the President.
The first and important stage has been passed though and so we welcome this as good news! In the meantime, anyone moving to or from the USA should take action to have their confidentiality request processed in good time.
