10 Tips for Arranging a Smooth Office Relocation

March 13, 2020 by Nuss Removals

Employment in Australia is projected to reach 13.08 million by 2020. Whether your team is big or small, relocating your business can feel like a stressful endeavor. After all, the move will disrupt operations and distract your employees from their work.

With these 10 tips, you can arrange a smooth office relocation without the stress.

Instead of an expensive, time-consuming process, you can plan for an efficient office move. By planning ahead, you can save time and get your business back up and running in no time!

  1. Donate What You Don’t Need

An office move is the best time to take stock of what you need and get rid of the rest.

That includes:

  • Old copiers
  • Printers
  • Computers
  • Office furniture
  • Phones
  • General office supplies

If you no longer need or want it, why take it with you on the move? Instead, donate what you don’t need. That way, you won’t have to pay for moving these extra items.

Plus, donating allows you to recycle the extra office equipment so someone else can put it to good use.

  1. Start Packing Early

You’re busy handling day-to-day business tasks. We understand. Unfortunately, putting off your office relocation to-do list can leave you scrambling.

Instead of waiting until the last minute, plan ahead.

Try to pack items you don’t use every day first. Packing little by little can help you make the most of the time you have available.

Many people don’t realise how time-consuming an office move is until the day arrives. With office relocation planning, you can get ahead of schedule. That way, you won’t be as stressed when it’s time to make the move.

Take stock of what you need to move during this step. That way, you can give the office removalists an accurate estimate of which items you’re moving.

If you’re looking to save money, consider looking for used boxes and packing supplies. In addition to saving on packing costs, this will also help you gather what you need before moving day.

  1. Label Everything

As you start packing, make sure you label each box before you tape them shut!

Mark the top and side of each box with a list of what’s inside. That way, if you need to unpack something before moving day (or the day of), you can find what you’re looking for. Marking both the top and side of the box makes it easier to find the list.

If you have many boxes, number them!

This will help you avoid losing a box during the office relocation process.

Type a list numbering each box and what’s inside. With this tip, you’ll know where everything is. If something gets lost, it’s easier to make a claim and replace the missing items.

  1. Call Ahead for Help

According to this report, road traffic deaths have decreased over time in Australia. However, trying to drive a large moving vehicle is more difficult for some than others. This can lead to an unintentional crash, which can impact your office relocation and team.

Instead of trying to handle your office relocation on your own, consider hiring a team of professional removalists.

In addition to driving the moving van for you, they can also help by doing the heavy lifting. That way, you don’t have to worry about one of your employees getting injured on moving day.

If you’re planning on requesting an office moving service, plan ahead. Call one or two months in advance. Look at a few different companies so you can compare price quotes.

Calling ahead of time will help you mark one more item off your business relocation checklist!

  1. Take Care of Cables

Whether you have two cables or a dozen, those cords get tangled – fast. The best way to make a move with computer cables is to remove all the cables from one computer at a time. That way, you know which computer they belong to.

Then, put the cables in a large zip-lock bag. On the bag, write out which person the cables belong to.

You can also use zip-ties to keep the cables from getting tangled.

Placing the cables in a bag, however, will help you protect ports and pins from damage during the office relocation.

  1. Individually Pack Equipment

Wrap each computer monitor in its own bubble wrap. It’s important not to place these computers in boxes, which could lead to damages.

Consider parking the computer’s hard drive as well. However, this won’t guarantee that you’ll preserve the data. Instead, consider using a removable hard drive or backup your data in the cloud.

  1. Get Insurance

If you rent a truck, make sure you get insurance coverage.

We recommend you choose an office moving service instead. Ask if they have insurance coverage options to protect your belongings. Otherwise, you might find yourself in trouble if something happens during the office move.

  1. Adhere to Special Instructions

Like your computers, printers are sensitive. They require a little more attention during your office move.

First, replace the printer cartridges. Then, tape down the covers and scanner lids.

Follow any special instructions about moving for your fax machines, copiers, or printers. Otherwise, damage during the move could void the warranty.

  1. Spread the Word

Let everyone know about your big move!

You’ll need to update your business’ address and notify the post office, creditors, and the bank. Make sure to update the address on your stationery, business cards, and website, too.

Let your clients know you’re making a move. That way, they’ll have the correct address before sending their next payment.

  1. Make a List and Doublecheck It

The best way to avoid major mistakes throughout the office relocation process is to make a list.

Consider what you need to do before the move, during, and after. You can even make a plan for unpacking everything. That way, you can get your business up and running as soon as possible.

9 Questions to Ask Movers Before You Hire Them

March 4, 2020 by Nuss Removals

During a move, your items are susceptible to various mishaps that can happen while they’re in transit. Damaged items and lost items are some of the most common issues with removalists, along with delays in schedule and damages in the house when transferring the items.

These are the reasons why choosing the right company is the most important aspect when planning a move. Whether you’re moving locally or interstate, it’s going to be one of your most expensive decisions and so you need to get it right.

To help you better assess the reliability of a removalist, here are the questions to ask movers. Their answers to these questions will help you determine whether they’re the right ones for the job.

  1. Are you AFRA Certified?

It is important to note that there is no formal licensing or regulation of the removal industry in Australia. To ensure the best possible service, you should always choose an AFRA certified removalist (Australian Furniture Removers Association). This ensures they must meet certain standards in relation to equipment, vehicles, premises and staff training to complete a professional move.

You shouldn’t assume that every business you see on classified ads or in the search engine results is accredited with AFRA. Some are operating on their own and they may cut corners to offer you a cheap quote. You don’t have an assurance that they will follow a set of rules and regulations about the safety of your items.

  1. What Equipment Do You Have?

The mover must have the necessary equipment to move all your items. They must have the right-sized truck – big enough to accommodate your biggest items. They should also have the basics like hoisting equipment and several dollies.

Do you have any special item that needs special handling? Make sure they have the equipment for that by asking. If they use a subcontractor for this part, check with that company, too.

  1. What Kind of Insurance Coverage Can You Offer?

You want to make sure that your belongings are properly covered should an accident occur. Ask for details of their transit insurance options; a legitimate removalist should be able to provide you with a choice of policy and cover.

You can, for instance, get coverage for local removals, interstate removals, and even storage based on full replacement or market value. The premiums will vary based on the cover that you choose but a good removalists will have an option  that will work for you.

  1. Are Your Workers Covered?

Did you know that you can be liable for any injury that happened on your property? For instance, an accident happens while a mover was getting an item from your house. The accident then results in a major injury.

If they don’t have the proper workers’ and public liability insurance, you’ll have to pay for their injury. That’s because the worker was injured on your property.

Although the movers will only be staying for a short time on your property, their safety is still a responsibility to give you cause for concern.

  1. How Long Have You Been in Business?

A removalist that has been around for a while means they have a lot of experience. The oldest companies may have already encountered every delay, mistake, and other mishaps. This becomes important as you’ll be sure they’ll already know what to do if the same thing happens for your move.

It’s also a good sign that they’ve been producing satisfactory results to be able to stay afloat for so long. However, longevity doesn’t necessarily equate to quality service, so don’t base your decision on this alone.

  1. Do You Have Experience With My Type of Move?

That said, you also have to specifically ask if they have experience with your specific type of move. Are you moving to a high-rise apartment? Or a big city with limited parking places?

Ask this question, especially if you’re moving somewhere with added difficulties. Moving stuff to the fifth floor of a building is far harder than moving to a suburban home, for instance.

Still, ask if they’re prepared for any kind of scenario. What if there are limited parking spaces or there are no elevators in your building? Relay your concerns to them so they would also know what they can expect.

  1. Who Will Be Providing the Services at the Destination?

At the destination, the movers will have to unload, unpack, assemble furniture, and such like. However, not all moving companies take this responsibility.

That’s why it’s one of the most important questions to ask movers, especially if you’re doing a long-distance move.

Ask if they’ll be the ones to do these things or will they subcontract it to another company. If so, ask which company it is so you can research on your own. You might trust the moving company, but will you be entrusting your items to the other, as well?

  1. Do You Have References?

If you’re still not quite sure about a company, ask for references. Then, check on these references to see if their past customers have been happy with them.

Don’t forget to ask their references for their opinions on how they found the company’s service. Were they careful with the items? Did they provide updates? Were they prompt and courteous?

Another good way to check the reputation of a company is to read online reviews. Search on Google by using the keyword “removalist name + reviews.”

You may also ask your neighbours, friends, and acquaintances who may have used the company’s services before.

  1. Can You Provide a Fixed Quote?

A fixed quote means that you’re only expected to pay what the estimate says provided you have made no changes to the items being moved and that the circumstances have not change either. An hourly rates quote may leave you with surprises. In the event that your items are heavier than expected or the move took longer than expected, you’ll pay more than what you’re quoted for, but it’s also possible to pay less.

For many people, it’s better to get a fixed quote instead for this reason. They can be sure that the total cost they pay won’t exceed the final price the company offered unless the circumstances change. The best way is to have an in-home survey completed before your move. This means the removal company will visit you in your home to assess the size and complexity of your move, to provide an accurate quotation.

More Questions to Ask Movers

If you’re meticulous, don’t hesitate to ask more questions. Here are examples of other questions to ask movers:

  • How do you ensure the safety of my furniture and items?
  • Are you available on our preferred moving date?
  • Do you offer shared loads at lower rates?

Always ask any questions that will help you ease your worries. Contact us today and we’ll be happy to help.

Empty Nest? 10 Tips for Downsizing Your Possessions When You’re Moving to a Smaller Home

January 31, 2020 by Nuss Removals

Did you know that more people want to downsize than purchase a massive home?

That’s right — and downsizing comes with benefits ranging from lower house prices to improved accessibility.

Whether you’re downsizing out of choice or because of circumstances beyond your control, choosing which of your possessions to let go can be tricky. You’ll also need to decide what you’re actually going to do with everything that you want to dispose of.

Luckily, we’re here to help.

Keep reading for ten practical tips on downsizing your possessions before you move to a smaller home.

  1. Remember All The Benefits of Downsizing

Deciding to downsize can be emotional, and you might find yourself resenting the fact that you’ll have to discard some things.

The wrong mindset will make the process much harder, so try and focus on the positives.

Downsizing might allow you to live in a property that’s easier to get around if you have mobility issues. It’s a good way to save money and keep your place organized, and it can also help you to live a calmer, more minimalist lifestyle.

Make a list of all the good things about downsizing and keep it close by while you’re sorting.

  1. Figure out How Much Space You’ll Have

Exactly how much smaller is your new home than your current place?

Take a look at the floorplans to work out how much you can keep and how much you need to discard. It might help to make sketches, deciding roughly where each item of furniture will go.

Some things will quickly become clear — a tiny guest room might mean there’s no space for that king-size bed.

You should also look at all the storage space in your new home, including cupboards, closets, spare rooms, and attics. This will help you work out how many smaller items you can keep.

  1. Start by Sorting out Items in Storage

Do you have a storage room you very rarely go in?

Start there, since it’s likely to be full of things you don’t actually use and don’t really need to hold onto.

You might find old hobby items, clothes that don’t fit, and leftover DIY supplies. Let go of anything you won’t use within the next year.

If you’re lucky, you might even find some forgotten items that you can donate or give away.

  1. Think About What You Use Most Often

What does your current daily routine look like, and which items are most important?

If you cycle every day but rarely use your treadmill, it makes sense to keep your bike but lose the running machine.

Other items like your favorite reading chair might be essential to your daily routine, while certain ornaments or side tables might be disposable.

Think carefully about what’s essential to your everyday health and happiness.

  1. Keep Items With Sentimental Value

Downsizing doesn’t mean letting go of cherished possessions.

Make sure you allocate space for sentimental items like old letters, trophies, children’s toys, and ornaments. Do be selective though — you probably don’t need to keep every scribble your child did as a toddler.

Think about creating curated memory boxes that you keep in an accessible area, rather than throwing everything straight into storage.

  1. Consider Giving Items Away to Family Members

While it’s often said that millennials don’t want to take furniture and other items from relatives, it’s still worth asking before you sell or donate.

Did your son just move into his first studio apartment? He might love your old sofa for his living room!

Does your daughter love upcycling? She might have some cool ideas on how to modernize your old dressing table.

Don’t make your relatives feel obliged to take your stuff, but let them know that the offer’s there.

  1. Donate Unwanted Goods to Local Charities

Many charities accept everything from old furniture and appliances to board games and decorations.

If you don’t want items that are in good condition to go to waste but can’t be bothered to sell them, donating to charity is a convenient option. It’s also a great way to support a cause you believe in.

Some charities offer a free collection service for large items, so be sure to ask.

  1. Hold a Garage Sale to Make Some Extra Cash

Want to make a little extra pocket money to help you decorate your new home?

Holding a garage sale is an excellent way to shift lots of unwanted belongings and make some spare change while you’re at it.

Try and choose a sunny day and advertise for a while beforehand to make sure plenty of people attend. Keep prices low if your priority is clearing out as many items as possible.

  1. Put Things You’re Unsure About in Storage

Are there a few things you don’t have room for but can’t bear to let go?

If you’re really stuck, consider putting these items in storage for a few months, then re-evaluating.

By then, you might not even miss the item, and could be ready to get rid of it. Alternatively, you might realize it’s something you can’t live without and find a way to make space for it.

  1. Organize Your Possessions as You Sort

Want to make the moving process easier?

Make an effort to organize your possessions to get a headstart on packing and unpacking before the movers arrive. Use boxes to categorize items, and label them clearly.

Sort possessions by room where possible to make them easy to unpack in your new place.

You can do all this sorting while you’re clearing out, so it’s a good way to kill two birds with one stone.

Why Downsizing Your Possessions Doesn’t Have to Be a Bad Thing

Downsizing your possessions can feel hard, but it’s often a good thing.

You’ll work out what’s actually important to you, hold onto only the most precious items, and feel less overwhelmed by clutter.

Selling and donating items helps you make money and support worthy causes too.

10 Reasons to Hire Professional Movers For Your Sydney Relocation

December 16, 2019 by Nuss Removals

A survey from a decade ago found that 43% of Australians had moved in the last 5 years. This number probably hasn’t changed much since then, and you might be part of the statistic yourself.

For those of you who are moving in the near future, there’s a lot to think about. Not only do you have to sign a new lease or mortgage, but you also have to figure out how to get your belongings from one place to the other.

But you shouldn’t have to do it alone. Here are 7 reasons why you should hire professional movers for your Sydney relocation.

1. You Won’t Risk Your Health

When you’re relocating, you’re usually bringing all or most of your possessions along with you. Even individually they can be quite heavy; put everything together, and you’ve got an intense workout ahead of you.

Even if you’re in the best of shape, moving every single box yourself can quickly be tiring, which can drain a lot of the energy you need for the relocation.

When you hire professional movers you literally won’t have to lift a finger. They’ll do all the heavy lifting, which means you not only save some energy, but also reduce your risk of injury significantly.

2. You Can Leave the Packing to the Pros

Most movers will also pack up your belongings for you. So forget about spending hours painstakingly wrapping everything, putting them into boxes, stuffing them with cushioning, and taping the boxes up. Professional movers can do that for you.

It may seem like a simple task, but when you leaving packing to the pros, you benefit in 3 main ways.

The first is you get to save a lot of time since you don’t have to pack anymore. Secondly, since you free up some time (and eliminate a task from your to-do list), you’ll be less stressed out. And the third reason is you won’t have to worry about how to pack things up. Since professional movers have done this many times before, they know all the tricks to safeguard your belongings in your relocation process.

3. You Won’t Have to Drive the Truck

Without the services of a professional mover, you’ll most likely have to hire a truck yourself. This process comes with the headache of going to the rental company, picking out a truck, and signing the papers. Then, you’ll have to load it up, empty it, then return the truck.

On top of this, driving a truck is considerably more difficult than driving a car. You need ot allow more room between yourself and ther vehicles on the road. And any accidental damage to the truck will be charged back to you, often amounting to more than the cost of hiring movers.

Just thinking about all that is enough to make you exhausted.

Not only will a professional moving company provide the truck and drive it themselves, but they’ll also load and unload the vehicle. Again, you won’t have to do any of the manual labour on your own.

4. All Your Items Can Be Insured

Sorting out insurance for your possessions can be a headache, and you may not get coverage in certain circumstances. These are your most treasured items, so you should think about going the extra mile to protect them.

When you choose to take insurance, you’ll get peace of mind knowing that everything the removal team transport is insured and protected. The insurance will be part of your formal quotation, so there’s nothing extra to sort out.

Should anything happen to your items, whether it’s a cheap bookcase or an expensive family heirloom, the insurance should cover the costs to replace and/or repair the item depending on the type and level of cover you opt for.

5. You Get to Focus on Other Aspects of the Move

While it’s only one aspect of your relocation, transporting your belongings from point A to point B can eat up a lot of your time and focus. You may start neglecting other aspects of the move or your personal life. For example, you may realize you haven’t paid a down payment for your new home or you may find your children are sad you haven’t paid as much attention to them.

When you can free yourself from this element of your relocation, you’ll get more time to focus on important tasks. If you’re moving out of the country, then you’ll be able to spend more time with your loved ones and see the sights for some last memories before you have to leave.

6. You Won’t Have to Take Time off Work

It’s important to save up as much money as you can before you make the big move. If you have to take time off work to stay home and pack, this may hinder your saving efforts.

It’s true you’ll have to spend money to hire professional movers, but they’ll take care of every aspect from start to finish. That way, you won’t have to take more time off.

This can be extremely beneficial if you’re staying with the same company. It won’t be necessary for you to use up your allocated holiday days for your move.

7. Professionals Are Reliable

You may be tempted to go it alone through your own effort with some help from family and friends. But the truth of the matter is, they’re unpaid help, and though they mean the best, they may not always be reliable.

When it comes to a major relocation, you can’t afford to depend on people who may or may not show up on time. Get rid of those worries by going with pros, as you can count on them to show up whenever you need them.

Hire Professional Movers in Sydney for Your Relocation

With all these benefits that come with hiring professional movers, you can’t go wrong with reaching out and getting some help for your upcoming move. It’s already stressful enough relocating, so make it easier on yourself with some experts on your side.

Are you looking to hire a professional mover in Sydney soon? Then request a quote from us now! We’ll help make your move a success.

3 Tips for Packing Items That Require Extra Care

September 17, 2019 by Nuss Removals

Patience is a virtue, especially when packing fragile items for a move. Taking some extra care during packing will ensure you arrive at your destination with your furniture and possessions in the same condition as they are now.

With enough preparation and these tips from a professional removalist in Sydney, you can prevent your fragile items from getting damaged during transit.

1. Get the right packing materials

Since you’re dealing with fragile items, don’t use old cartons to try and save money on packing materials. Old cartons may be too weak and already compromised from previous use to be able to handle the weight. You may be able to save by using makeshift packing and wrapping materials but those may not provide sufficient protection for your delicate items.

It’s a smarter choice to spend more on packing materials than repairing or replacing your damaged belongings later on. It’s too great a risk and simply not worth it. Below are the appropriate materials that you should be using.

  • Thick wrapping material – The thicker the wrapping is, the lower the risk of damage to your items. Thick wrapping gives better overall protection, especially when items bump or brush against each other during transport. You can create several layers of wrapping around a fragile item for extra protection, using bubble wrap, foam padding and moving blankets.
  • Sturdy cushioning – Crumpled paper isn’t enough as a cushion for heavy items in a box. It will eventually get flattened under the weight of the item and won’t provide enough protection. Instead, use large-sized bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, foam padding and packing peanuts.
  • Sturdy boxes – Use heavy duty shipping boxes or double-ply cardboard cartons that are strong enough to withstand heavy items and protect fragile pieces. Consider getting specialty boxes such as wine boxes, picture boxes and book boxes.

2. Prepare items for packing

If possible, clean and empty the items to prepare them for packing. Doing so helps prevent damage during shipment and, at the same time, make the items lighter to carry and ready for easy unpacking. You will also need to disassemble furniture pieces, appliances, equipment, and musical instruments to pack them properly.

After you contact a removalist and finalise your move date, start packing as early as possible. Unlike other items, delicate things like artwork, dishware, and musical instruments require time to pack efficiently.

3. Consider the type of item you’re packing

Different fragile items need different methods of packing. Once you’ve prepared the items you intend to pack, these steps may help:

  • Select a sturdy, padded box that is somewhat larger than the item you plan on packing.
  • Place the item at the centre of the box so that there’s space between the item and the sides of the box.
  • Fill the empty spaces at the sides using cardboard, foam sheets, large-sized bubble wrap, or packing peanuts.
  • Fill the extra space at the top of the box with cushioning material. Make sure that the box has a firm top once sealed with packing tape, as it may cave in once another box gets stacked over it.
  • Place labels on cartons indicating their contents. Also, write “HANDLE WITH CARE”, “FRAGILE ITEMS”, and “THIS SIDE UP” so that the removalists will know that they have to be cautious when loading and unloading these boxes.

Packing methods depending on the type of item:

Glasses

Place crumpled paper inside each glass to eliminate any empty space, then wrap glasses separately using packing paper. Line boxes at the top and bottom with an ample amount of packing paper.

Lamps

Box your lamps separately with the flat side down using plenty of packing paper. You can place the bases in a large box, and use bubble wrap wherever possible.

Piano

Packing a piano will require tight and thorough packing to safeguard the intricate parts of the instrument. We only recommend letting professionals dismantle and pack your piano to ensure safe transport. A piano is expensive; one wrong move during packing may damage the instrument.

Picture Frames

Place picture frames inside small to medium boxes lined with packing paper. Add crumpled paper between each frame to ensure that they remain in place inside the box. Remember, there are special cartons available for packing pictures.

Plates

Using small to medium cartons, pack plates vertically and line them with crumpled packing paper on top and at the bottom. Take the time to wrap each plate using bubble wrap and place paper in between them.

Properly packing for a move is crucial to ensure your items arrive in the state they were packed. But if you’re someone who doesn’t have the luxury of time to spend on packing, especially fragile items, Nuss Removals can handle the job well for you.

At Nuss Removals, we make it our goal to provide each of our clients a stress-free moving experience.
